For crypto owners

Protect your coins and pass them on without giving up control.

If you hold your coins yourself, your secret words (the seed phrase) are the only way to reach them. Heldena protects them against loss and theft, and makes sure your heirs can reach them after your death. You keep full control.

Everything is encrypted on your device before it leaves the device. We never see your secret words.

What this is about: Three risks, and how Heldena catches each one

Your secret words (the “seed phrase”) are the only key to your coins. Wherever they are kept (on paper, in a password manager, in the cloud), three things can go wrong:

Losing them
–A misplaced note, a deleted file, a forgotten password for the password manager: the key is gone, and the coins with it.
+Heldena splits the access and spreads it, encrypted, among people you trust. None of them can read anything with it or open anything alone, and a lost part can be replaced.
Being stolen
–Whoever finds the words or hacks your password manager transfers your coins to themselves in seconds.
+At Heldena everything is stored encrypted, and only you have the key. And because the access is split, a single find is worth nothing.
Passing them on
–If you die, your family understands neither the hardware wallet nor the secret words, and no court or notary can move the coins.
+After your death, your heirs are guided to the access step by step, never during your lifetime.

A considerable part of all bitcoin is considered permanently lost, mostly through lost keys or death without a plan.

How it is stored: Stored encrypted, split safely

This is how your secret words get into your box, and how the recovery access is split among your trusted people:

WITHOUT HELDENA
📄
on paper or in an app
lost = everything gone
heir cannot get to it
WITH HELDENA
stored encrypted
only you can read them
heir: gets access, with safeguards
ℹ️ You decide how much you store: the whole seed phrase, or only a hint (“it is in the safe deposit box”) if you do not want to type it in. You can add the wallet type, passphrase and multisig setup as a note, so your heirs get not only words but the whole way to the wallet.

To check: What you can check for yourself

Three points where people who hold their own coins usually walk away, answered honestly here:

No ID from you
You start without KYC and never show an ID. Only after your death do your heirs identify themselves to your trusted people (by video), so that the access goes to the right person. During your lifetime, nobody asks you for an ID.
Servers under European law
Our servers (in Switzerland) hold only encrypted data anyway. The location only decides whose law this encrypted data falls under: deliberately European data protection instead of a US cloud.
Runs without us
Passing on your vault also works without us altogether: the key shares are on your trusted people's devices, not with us. And you can take your own holdings with you as a readable file at any time. You are never tied to us.
To read for yourself, once it is published:

The code will be open source, along with the complete cryptography specification as a white paper and independent audit reports, all when the production version launches. As long as the repository, white paper and audit are not there, we claim no numbers here that you cannot read up on yourself.

Cryptography & security in detail

Common questions: What people who hold their own coins ask first

Do I really have to type my seed phrase into the app?
No. You can store the complete phrase encrypted, or only a hint (where the hardware wallet is, a reminder of the passphrase) if you prefer. Whatever you enter is encrypted on your device before it leaves the device; we never see it.
Passphrase, multisig, several wallets: can I store that too?
Yes. Besides the phrase (BIP39, 12 to 24 words), you can store the wallet type, a derivation path hint, the passphrase (the “25th word”) and your multisig setup as metadata, so your heirs get not only words but the whole way in.
Can anyone get to my coins during my lifetime?
Not through Heldena. During your lifetime, only your own access on your own device can get in. The recovery access spread among your trusted people takes effect once one of them reports your death or an account recovery, enough of them confirm independently and the protection period has run out. And you can stop the case until it is released, as long as you are able to. But if as many of your trusted people as the minimum number secretly team up, no technology can prevent it; that is why it matters whom you choose.
